This month in my “Year of Charity,” I am focusing on “Charity is kind.”
A friend of mine once said, “Being kind is different than being nice. I’d rather be kind.” I’ve thought a lot about that.
Here are the definitions of each:
Nice: Pleasing, agreeable, delightful
Kind: Of a good or benevolent nature or disposition
So this month as I think about being kind, I am going to try to understand the differences between being pleasing, agreeable, and delightful and being of a good or benevolent nature. I believe being nice and being kind are both important, but one seems more important than the other.
Another friend sent me this quote in relation to kindness and the character of Jesus. “One of the greatest indicators of righteous character is the capacity to recognize and appropriately respond to other people who are experiencing the very challenge or adversity that is most immediately and forcefully pressing upon us.” David A. Bednar
I’m going to be thinking how this quote relates to kindness and how I can better respond to people even while I am going through my own challenges. I think that might be the key to kindness.
What are your thoughts? Hopefully you’ll come back at the end of the month and let me know what you’ve discovered about kindness.
